Drives and desires in dogs
Do dogs have desires? Of course! We need to understand what these desires are in dogs. We do this by looking at what motivates them. Or rather, by looking at the instincts that translate into actions. Think of actions such as chasing, exploring and competing with other dogs.
For example, dogs love to work together. They are loyal, faithful animals that enjoy collaborating with others. When you do an activity with your dog, your dog sees its greatest desire come true.
So what motivates them are 'drives to act'. These drives characterise a species or breed and ensure that the animal enjoys performing the activity in question. So try to meet your dog's desires and drives and fulfil them through activities such as playing. This will give your dog a sense of satisfaction. Your dog will experience the pleasure of involvement and joy. Isn't that what you want for your favourite four-legged friend?
An even more important reason to fulfil your dog's desires is peace of mind. Fulfilling an urge calms the dog and has a relaxing effect. Restlessness and boredom are eliminated, which are the main causes of behavioural problems. So, if you notice that your dog is experiencing urges or desires, do an activity together with your dog. This will make you both happier!
