Hyperactive dogs: what should we know and how should we behave?
Every dog is unique, but there are breeds and crossbreeds that tend to be hyperactive and very energetic. The owner's behaviour can often stimulate this excess energy. Physical interaction with the dog, such as playing or running, can fuel and increase energy levels. Even the tone of voice can make dogs even more excited.
How do you calm a hyperactive dog?
Calming requires a great deal of involvement from the owner. Your dog's calm and quiet behaviour should be rewarded. Busy and hyperactive behaviour, on the other hand, should be ignored. How should you reward your dog? That is a separate issue. Dogs become excited and restless at the idea of a reward. Barking, rubbing and spinning around are often seen by the owner as a sign of happiness or joy. However, it is important that this behaviour is not encouraged. A reward only reinforces such behaviour, making your dog even more hyperactive.
One of the best solutions for releasing your dog's energy is to engage in an activity. A long walk in the park or some outdoor distraction will ensure that your dog comes home tired and calm. It all depends on how much time you, as the owner, can spend with your little friend.
